Delay in production of Made in USA Nissan Leaf?

One of Nissan Motor Co. top official said that US may see delay in the start of U.S. built Nissan Leaf electric car because of the disruption caused by the huge quake in Japan.

Hideaki Watanabe, vice president in charge of Nissan's global Zero Emission Vehicle business unit, said many timetables had been thrown off by the March 11 earthquake, as Nissan focused all of its resources on restoring its manufacturing output in Japan.

Watanabe said "there's a risk" of delay but it was too early to estimate how long that might be.

The quake's impact "is putting us in a very difficult situation," Watanabe said at a briefing at the Nissan Technical Center North America in Farmington Hills.

Nissan has sold 7,554 Leaf cars since the model's launch late last year. Nearly 5,000 have been delivered to Japanese customers, and just under 2,100 to buyers in the United States the Leaf's second-biggest market.

This year, Nissan expects to ship 10,000 to 12,000 Leaf cars to the U.S. below expectations of as many as 20,000.

Nissan's AC system produces Vitamin C, hydrates your skin

Nissan is taking it Climate Control option to the Next Level. Nissan has developed technology that diffuses into the vehicle cabin breathable vitamin C that can supposedly help improve skin moisture.

Nissan has already implemented in the Fuga its "Forest AC" air conditioning system, which aims to recreate the breezes, temperature, humidity, and aroma of natural forests, and the carmaker is taking its environmental optimization to the next level with its new Advanced Climate Control System. The system enables the occupants to control the temperature, Plasmacluster Ions generator, and the grape polyphenol clean air filter, according to a Dailymail.

Designed by Sharp, the system's highly concentrated Plasmacluster Ions are used to reduce airborne bacteria and mold levels; control odors; and deactivate allergens in the air, and recently research has reportedly shown that they help keep the skin naturally moisturized. The system also uses sensors to detect other noxious odors from farms or factories outside and automatically switches the ventilation system.

Nissan Announces Roll-Out Plan for Zero-Emission Nissan LEAF at the Plug-in 2010 Conference in San Jose

At the Plug-in 2010 Conference in San Jose, CA today, North America's Nissan  xecutive vice president, Carlos Tavares, announced that the Leaf's battery pack will be covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty similar to that of what Chevrolet is offering on the Volt pack. He said that feedback from people interested in the Leaf was important in setting these levels, so that explains why Leaf hand-raisers received email surveys about the topic recently.

Nissan has also announced its official rollout plans. Nissan LEAF will first launch in December, in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Tennessee. Firm orders from these five states, which make up the so-called EV Project, will begin in August.

Following that initial wave, the machine will be sent to Texas and Hawaii in January 2011. Next up will be North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina and Alabama in April 2011. The rest of the nation will see their Leafs beginning in the fall of 2011 with availability in all markets nationwide by the end of that year.

PRESS RELEASE

Nissan Announces National Market Roll-Out Plan for Zero-Emission Nissan LEAF

- More than half of 17,000 reservations located in initial launch markets -

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, nearly 17,000 future Nissan LEAF drivers are learning when the world's first affordable all-electric, zero-emission vehicle will be available in their markets. Consumers who have placed reservations for the Nissan LEAF received a communication today regarding market timing and next steps in ordering the all-electric vehicle.

Nissan LEAF first will be available to consumers in December, in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Tennessee. These areas are home to The EV Project the largest electric vehicle and infrastructure deployment ever undertaken. The EV Project is a result of a partnership with charging infrastructure provider ECOtality and partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Customers in these first five launch states, who represent more than 55 percent of total Nissan LEAF reservations, will be able to place firm orders for the Nissan LEAF starting in August.

Nissan LEAF will be introduced to Texas and Hawaii shortly thereafter, in January 2011; North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina and Alabama follow in April 2011; and be rolled-out to the balance of the nation beginning in Fall 2011 with availability in all markets nationwide by the end of that year.

"We are pleased to see so many people making a choice for a zero-emission future by placing reservations for the Nissan LEAF," said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America. "Consumer feedback and market readiness have been key drivers in developing our phased rollout. Nissan is able to target areas of customer demand for early launch, while continuing to work in future markets to ensure the continued success of electric vehicles."

Nissan North America also is informing its consumers that the lithium-ion battery pack that powers the Nissan LEAF will carry a warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles matching U.S. market competitive conditions.

Consumers who have reserved the Nissan LEAF online will be invited to place orders through their dealer for the vehicle in advance of market roll-out timing, allowing time for consumers to select a dealer and assess home charging needs. Nissan is continuing to take reservations for the Nissan LEAF through its website, www.NissanUSA.com. Interested consumers are encouraged to place a reservation, which entails a $99 fully refundable fee to secure a spot on the list to place an order.

The reservations process has educated Nissan about more than just geographic distribution. Some information we've learned about future Nissan LEAF drivers includes:

  • Favorite color: The favorite color of Nissan LEAF owners is blue. More than 30 percent of reservations are for blue Nissan LEAF electric cars. Silver is a close second, at about 26 percent. The remaining reservations are close to evenly split among red, black and white.
  • Trim level: About 75 percent of Nissan LEAF orders are for the SL trim level, which adds a rearview monitor, solar panel spoiler, fog lights, and automatic headlights.
  • Home and Parking: About 75 percent of people who placed reservations own a single-family home. About 68 percent have attached garages, while an additional 18 percent have detached garages or carports. Home ownership and dedicated parking are important factors for Nissan LEAF drivers who plan to charge their vehicles at home.
  • Purchase time: About 67 percent of Nissan LEAF reservations holders have indicated that they'd be ready to purchase or lease a Nissan LEAF within one year of placing the reservation. An additional 24 percent indicated they would be ready in one to two years.
  • Interests: Several primary interests are inspiring people to order a Nissan LEAF. Cited interests include energy independence (35 percent); environmental consciousness (34 percent); and cost/fuel economy (20 percent).

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive design, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Nissan is dedicated to improving the environment under the Nissan Green Program 2010, whose key priorities are reducing CO2 emissions, cutting other emissions and increasing recycling. Nissan recalls 51,100 Cubes for fire risk

(Reuters) Nissan Motor Co. is recalling 51,100 Cube compacts in North America after U.S. safety regulators said a fuel leak could cause fire after a crash, the regulator and the automaker said on Monday.

The chance that 2009 and 2010 model year Cubes could leak fuel if struck from the rear at 50 miles per hour led to the recall, documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show.

Last week, Nissan suspended sales and shipments of Cubes from Japan to the United States and Canada. Markets outside North America are not affected, said Nissan spokesman Colin Price.

Nissan said no injuries or crashes have been reported in relation to the issue with Cube, a quirky box-shaped compact sedan.

Sales and production will resume once a manufacturing fix is in place. Price said Nissan was working with its suppliers on the manufacturing fix.

The Cube failed a NHTSA test in which it is struck from the rear at 50 mph (80 kph). Fuel leaked when the Cube was put on its side after the impact, the tests showed.

Cube owners will be notified by late August to bring their vehicles to Nissan dealers for a fix. The fix involves installing a protective device for the fuel filler recirculation tube in the fuel neck of the vehicle.

Nissan aims to double mileage for its First Hybrid.

Nissan Motor Co. said it aims to significantly improve and nearly double the mileage on its first hybrid car developed compared with the gasoline-engine version, while keeping costs down with a simple, single-motor system.

Japan's No. 3 automaker is due to launch a gasoline-electric Infiniti M sedan, called Fuga in Japan, late this year.

While admitting to the late start, Nissan said its one-motor, two-clutch system would achieve far better fuel economy, at a much lower technical cost compared with hybrid leader Toyota's complex, two-motor system.

"Typically, carmakers say the fuel economy improvement on their cars using a 'strong' or 'full' hybrid system is roughly 30 percent, while for 'mild' hybrids (like Honda's), it's 15 percent," said Koichi Hayasaki, chief engineer of Nissan's rear-wheel-drive hybrid system.

"We're aiming for an improvement of 60 to 90 percent," he said, adding that the hybrid Infiniti M would have mileage comparable to that of a compact car.

Nissan's hybrid system has a structure similar to that of Volkswagen AG's, mounting an extra clutch that separates the electric motor from the engine to allow for driving using only electric power when the battery is charged.

By having fewer components, Hayasaki said, Nissan's hybrid system was roughly 30 kg (66 lb) lighter than Toyota's series parallel system, which mounts two electric motors and two inverters, which make up the bulk of a hybrid system's cost.

As part of its drive to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its cars, Nissan is planning to also launch fuel-efficient three- and four-cylinder gasoline engines and stop-and-start technology this business year.

The new March, due for launch in Japan this month, will be the first to use the stop-start feature, which automatically shuts down the engine when the car comes to a brief stop. Nissan, held 43 percent by France's Renault SA, is due to start selling the Leaf full-electric car in Europe starting in December. Its sole hybrid model now is the Altima sedan, which uses Toyota's hybrid system.

Nissan Sentra - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Nissan Sentra ranks 24 out of 30 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 63 published reviews and test drives of the Nissan Sentra, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

For 2010 Nissan has reworked its pricing structure so that all six trims of the new Sentra are offered with more features at a lower starting price, which means a savings ranging from a of little over $100 on the base trim to over $1,000 on the top-of-the-line models. That said, between its underpowered engine and bland exterior styling, there are definitely other options that are worth a look.

Little has changed about the 2010 Sentra since its redesign three years ago, but there are a few changes. To begin with, the Sentra receives a slightly updated look with new headlights, taillights and a redesigned grille. All trims are also getting higher quality cloth interiors.

The 2010 Nissan Sentra has a lot going for it -- decent gas mileage, a comfortable and roomy cabin and an impressive list of interior features -- so reviewers agree that it's a good choice as a daily driver. Nonetheless, for the most part, the automotive press is unimpressed with the Sentra. The biggest complaints concern the unimpressive engine and abundant interior plastics. If performance is important to you, you should definitely check out the Mazda3 for both its higher "fun-to-drive" quotient and starting price of about $1,000 less than the Sentra. The Volkswagen Jetta is also worth considering for its considerably smoother ride, although you will pay about $1,000 extra for the additional comfort. Moreover, if you're looking for a higher quality interior with a similarly long list of features in the same general price range, have a look at the Volkswagen Rabbit.

The Sentra's four basic trims (2.0, 2.0 S, 2.0 SR and 2.0 SL) are offered with a two-liter four-cylinder engine while the two more upscale trims (SE-R and SE-R Spec V) boast stronger engines. Be sure to check out this month's Nissan Deals, where we've done the research so you can get the best discounts and incentives on a new Nissan.

  • Nissan has seemed to do the impossible with its refreshed 2010 Sentra and has added more amenities for a lower price. Now that's a combination that won't get old anytime soon." -- Motor Trend
  • "The new Sentra...looks more mature than the overly edgy current model. Combine that with more features and options available at a lower starting price across the board, and we think the Sentra may have a fighting chance of moving up a spot or two in the small car segment." -- Autoblog
  • "Sentra is a competent compact sedan with a number of upscale features." -- Consumer Guide
  • "If it's overshadowed in this realm by the Honda Civic, at least it's roomy, possesses good road manners, and is priced to sell." -- Car and Driver
  • "Most people buy a compact car to get the job done: namely, traveling economically from point A to point B. Just because a compact car often is a utilitarian purchase doesn't mean it has to be generic. With the 2009 Sentra, Nissan injects character without forgetting the small-car manifesto: the car has to be inexpensive to buy and operate." -- Washington Times
  • "The 2009 Nissan Sentra is a decent choice for an economy sedan, mainly because of its spacious cabin. However, other choices are better rounded, particularly in terms of fun factor, even compared to the SE-R models." -- Edmunds

Sentra Performance - 6.8 (Mediocre)

The 2010 Nissan Sentra is best used as a daily driver rather than a high-performance machine. Car and Driver says it best, claiming that the Sentra "possesses good road manners" but is "ho-hum in the power department." Read More

Sentra Exterior - 6.9 (Mediocre)

For 2010, Nissan gives the new Sentra a more updated look with new headlights, taillights and a redesigned grille. The automotive press hasn't had time to weigh in on the new changes, but they were less than thrilled by the exterior styling of the 2009 Sentra. That model was often described as "corporate-looking" and "peculiar." "Let me just say this: I don't think the Sentra's styling is a home run," says the Washington Times. Read More

Sentra Interior - 7.9 (Good)

Reviewers are impressed with the 2010 Sentra's well-designed interior which is more spacious than the hum-drum tight squeezes that make up most of the affordable small car class. As Cars.com puts it, "Just like its exterior, the Sentra's interior bests the competition." Read More

Sentra Safety - 9.6 (Excellent)

The federal government gave high marks to the 2010 Nissan Sentra in all crash tests, and although the insurance industry has not yet been able to complete its crash testing, the 2009 model earned top scores across the board. Read More

Nissan Rogue - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Nissan Rogue ranks 16 out of 24 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 32 published reviews and test drives of the Nissan Rogue, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Introduced in 2008, the Nissan Rogue is a decent value within its class. Its pleasant on-pavement ride, great cargo versatility, better-than-average fuel economy and affordable price trump many class competitors and make it worth a look. Still, without a V6 engine option, it falls short on power.

With a sticker price just over $20,000, the five-passenger Rogue is one of the more affordable compact SUVs. Its 22/27 mpg rating also places it in the top half of its class for fuel economy. "Overall, Rogue's competitors are quieter and more refined, but this compact Nissan gets points for sleek styling and high levels of interior functionality," says Consumer Guide. "If you can live with Rogue's sometimes harsh ride, this little Nissan might make sense."

Other SUVs to Consider

Though the Rogue's value makes it a good choice for families, there are even cheaper and more efficient options available. Value-seekers should check out the Jeep Patriot (which offers off-road capabilities) and Compass, which cost less than $19,000 and boast 23/28 mpg ratings. Unfortunately, like the Rogue, these don't offer V6 engines.

For more power, consider the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sorento and Dodge Nitro, all of which offer V6s. Remember, however, that you'll have to spend a bit more (at least $21,000), and fuel economy won't be as good.

Details: Nissan Rogue

The only addition the Rogue sees for 2010 is a 360 Value Package for the base model. It adds exterior features including a chrome grille, rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels. The new model is priced only $120 more than the 2009 Rogue. Be sure to check out this month's Nissan Deals to see if any discounts or incentives are available on the Rogue.

The Rogue is available in two trims -- the base S and upscale SL -- in either front- or all-wheel drive.

  • "On its first try, Nissan has produced a good-looking and spirited small SUV. It doesn't have a third row or optional V-6 power, but there are plenty of small-SUV buyers who desire neither feature. The Rogue has the rest of the small-sport-ute checklist covered." -- Car and Driver
  • "Without any real standout quality, the Rogue has a hard time making a case for itself in the panoply of competitors." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Overall, the Rogue is a fun, sporty and cool-looking compact crossover." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "Bottom line: If you need rugged, off-road capability, get an Xterra. If you want a kinder, gentler station wagon that you don't have to call a station wagon, get the Rogue." -- Orlando Sentinel
  • "The Rogue just barely manages to meet our performance expectations for a crossover SUV in its price range, and falls short when it comes to cabin tech." -- CNET

Rogue Performance - 7.8 (Good)

Test drivers are relatively pleased with the 2010 Nissan Rogue's overall performance, although its gearless transmission and underpowered engine detract from the praise. On the plus side is the Rogue's fuel economy, which is excellent for its class. Read More

Rogue Exterior - 7.1 (Good)

The 2010 Nissan Rogue's curvy styling gets a mixed reception. Some say it looks too much like others in its class, while others like its conventional look. "For an entry-level crossover, quite frankly it looks athletic and stylish," says Automobile.comRead More

Rogue Interior - 7.9 (Good)

The 2010 Nissan Rogue's cabin is comfortable, upscale and provides plenty of versatile cargo space. "If the CR-V sets the standard for lavish interiors in this segment, the Rogue matches it," says MSN. The materials are especially high-quality for the Rogue's affordable price. Also on the plus side is the Rogue's excellent optional rear pop-up storage system. Read More

Rogue Safety - 9.4 (Excellent)

The 2010 Nissan Rogue does very well in federal government and insurance industry crash tests. A big plus is that nearly all available safety features come standard. Read More

Nissan Pathfinder - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Nissan Pathfinder ranks 21 out of 23 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 41 published reviews and test drives of the Nissan Pathfinder, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

First introduced in 1986, the long-running Nissan Pathfinder is a good choice for those who want a versatile cabin and decent off-road capabilities. However, this SUV lags behind competitors in on-pavement handling and interior refinement, so it may not work as a daily driver or family hauler.

Unless buyers spend most of their time off road, the Nissan Pathfinder may be a poor choice. And even as an off-roader, it's bested by many of its competitors, including the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Nissan's own Xterra. Its overwhelming number of cargo and seating configurations is a strength. However, though its seven-seat capacity makes it tempting as a family vehicle, the second and third rows are cramped.

"Riding the same fully boxed frame as the full-size Armada SUV, the Pathfinder is exceptionally rugged, and the addition of a V-8 option last year gives it strong performance and towing capability," says Car and Driver. "Independent suspension makes for good road manners, and there's seating for seven." The Pathfinder is priced around the middle of its class, but its fuel economy falls closer to the bottom (though it's about average when compared to other off-road SUVs).

Other SUVs to Consider

Buyers who want a rugged SUV but need more comfortable accommodations should consider the Toyota 4Runner and Ford Explorer. The least expensive off-road SUV, the Jeep Patriot, costs less than $20K and boasts much better fuel economy than the Nissan Pathfinder.

New features for this year include a standard moonroof on the LE V6 model, a standard navigation system on the LE V8, and simplified exterior and interior color combinations. If you like the Pathfinder, be sure to check out this month's Nissan Deals.

The 2010 Nissan Pathfinder is available in several trims: the base S FE+, S, SE, LE V6 and LE V8. Since the 2010 model is nearly identical to the 2009, this review uses research from both model years.

  • "For everyday driving ease and fuel economy, this truck-type SUV trails such crossover rivals as the GMC Acadia and Nissan's own Murano. Only the most expensive versions offer the convenience of 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The...Nissan Pathfinder plays the role of a tough, rugged cowboy ready for the range. Yet, when negotiating city streets, the Pathfinder is a tame tiger offering many amenities to please the in-town crowd." -- DogCars.com
  • "Never having been much of a fan of the $40,000 SUV weighing nearly 5,000 pounds, I didn't find a lot enticing about this vehicle. It did go well in snow, with the drive-mode selector in 'auto.' The rearview camera, the heated steering wheel and the navigation system all proved useful enough at various times, but I could live without any of it and not miss a thing." -- AutoWeek
  • "The 2010 Nissan Pathfinder can tame the wilderness with its off-road skill, but it's not as adept in the concrete jungle. Consumers just wanting a comfortable seven-passenger midsize SUV will be better served by a large crossover." -- Edmunds

Pathfinder Performance - 7.5 (Good)

The Pathfinder's strengths are a solid driving feel, powerful V8 engine option and excellent off-road abilities. However, reviewers continue to complain about a less car-like ride than competitors -- a serious downside in a segment full of smooth-riding crossover SUVs.  Read More

Pathfinder Exterior - 6.9 (Mediocre)
