Volkswagen agrees to pay 4.46 Billion for rest half of Porsche.

The luxuriously stylish automakers Porsche will now be fully owed by German automakers Volkswagen (VW), as they agreed to shell out 4.46 bn bringing an end to two year old merger plan.

Both the automakers on Wednesday announced plans to speed up the merger process. This acquisition is good for both automakers as it enables them to avoid huge tax bill and to generate synergies faster.

Martin Winterkorn, VW chief executive, declared the combination to be "good for Volkswagen, good for Porsche and good for Germany as an industrial location".

VW aims to permanently surpass General Motors and Toyota to become the world's biggest carmaker by sales by 2018.

Increase in demand for Volkswagen Polo, Vento in India.

Looks like for the first time the German Auto-maker Vw is enjoying success in India with it latest model Polo(Hatchback/wagon) and Vento(sedan).

German Auto-maker Volkswagen said that there is an increase in demand for its Polo and Vento models in India due to which the waiting period for these two models had gone up to 2-3 months.

In order to cater this demand, company plans to ramp-up production at its Chakan facility in Maharashtra.

"At present, we have at least two to three months of waiting period for the Polo and Vento. We are ramping-up capacity at our Chakan facility to meet demand," Volkswagen Group Sales India (Passenger Cars) Director Neeraj Garg said.

Volkswagen sold 4,613 units of Polo and Vento in November this year. It sold over 26,000 units across models from January-November this year.

We all gona see all New Volkswagen Beetle from 2012 Edition.

Volkswagen is redesigning it popular small car Volkswagen Beetle for 2010 Edition. 2012 Volkswagen New Beetle will undergo an evolutionary styling change when production begins next year.

Since Beetle shares the same platform of VW Golf, New Beetle will continue to be assembled in Puebla, Mexico.

Spy photographs of the car reveal that all of the sheet metal has been replaced, but the overall design remains retro.

In an interview last October to Autocar, Stefan Jacoby, who at that time was the president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said the next generation New Beetle would have more space for rear-seat passengers and better packaging. However, the overall dimensions of the vehicle would not significantly change.

Jacoby said the major complaint about the current car aside from its age is the cramped rear seat. Few changes have been made to the current New Beetle since it debuted in 1998.

Here are some pics how 2012 Beetle may look like. PICs by Carpix(spionage) :)

(PTI) German auto major Volkswagen says it will start selling its midsized sedan Vento priced between Rs. 6.99-Rs. 9.23 lakh in the Indian market from September this year.

The new Vento, which has been introduced in 1.6-litre petrol and diesel variants will hit the Indian roads from September 6, 2010 and will be available through all Volkswagen dealers, the company said in a statement yesterday.

The much awaited car, which is the company's seventh model in India will be available at prices ranging between Rs. 6.99-Rs. 9.23 lakh at ex-showroom prices in Delhi. The petrol variant starts from Rs. 6.99 lakh while the starting price for the diesel variant is Rs. 7.99 lakh, the company added.

"The new Vento is an extension of our commitment towards the Indian consumers of providing the best quality products at competitive prices. Designed for the Indian market, it will be a strong addition to our product portfolio", VW Group Sales India Member of Board Neeraj Garg said.

Vento, which is being rolled out from the company's plant at Chakan in Maharashtra, will give the customers a choice between manual and automatic transmission.

The largest European carmaker had unveiled the Vento on July 6, 2010. The company had launched its hatchback Polo in the Indian market at Delhi ex-show room prices ranging between Rs. 4.34- Rs. 6.70 lakh in February this year.

VW Vento will be the second car after VW Polo to the masses.

Volkswagen Beetle powered by Human Waste

(Autocar) A VW Beetle, dubbed the Bio-Bug, has been converted to run on methane gas produced by human excrement.

The prototype was created by GENeco, a Bristol firm specialising in sustainability and organic waste.

See pictures of the GENeco Bio-Bug and how the process works

The car can travel for 10,000 miles one average motoring year using an amount of excrement equivalent to that produced by 70 homes over a one year period. Its economy is 5.3 miles per cubic metre of biogas and it can reach a top speed of 114 mph.

The car is started with regular petrol, then automatically switches to methane once the engine has warmed up. Mohammed Sadiq of GENeco said: "If you were to drive the car you wouldnt know it was powered by biogas as it performs just like any conventional car."

The gas used for the Bio-Bug came from the Wessex Water plant in Avonmouth and is generated through anaerobic digestion, which uses bacteria to process organic matter.

Before the gas can be used to power the car, the CO2 is removed to improve performance.

Volkswagen plans to build new Beetle, will be 'Radical Design'

We all might be seeing the all-new VW Beetle, which is due to launch at next years Detroit motor show, will be a "radical design", according to company sources.

Sources have told Autocar that VW hasnt gone down the Mini route by just tweaking the cars styling.

The Beetles designers  are working hard to create a new design rather than tweaking it. They are hopeful to  produce a completely fresh, modern take on the classic VW.

A hybrid is also planned, with a similar drivetrain to that of the Jetta CC from this years Detroit show: a 150bhp turbocharged/supercharged 1.4 with a 27bhp electric motor.

The new Beetle is expected to go on sale in the UK in May 2011. A cabriolet will follow about a year later.

Volkswagens new small car, codenamed Up, will be sold as the Lupo.

As per Autocar Uk Article, Volkswagen's new small car won't be called the Up!, it will be called Lupo. The Lupo, a nameplate known throughout Europe until it ceased production in 2005, was VW's small, sub-Polo offering. In its new incarnation, the Lupo will replace the Fox, currently the smallest VW sold.

The power of the Up!/Lupo will also come with a more conventional powertrain layout. The rear underfloor-mounted engine was innovative. The Lupo that goes on sale next summer is expected to be offered with the choice of either a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gas engine putting out 75 horsepower or a 1.2-liter Bluemotion-branded diesel.

The Electric-Up that will supposedly hit our market in 2013 might be coming as an Audi only. The VW Group plans to spread the Up!/Lupo gospel throughout its companies, but the electrified version is being worked on "in partnership with" Audi. Since Audi's has good electric network in the U.S. thanks to its e-tron concepts, and with the price premium electric cars command, we wouldn't be surprised if the electric Lupo initially comes to the U.S. wearing interlocking nose rings.

Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 suprise is Out

VW has sent out a teaser image of the Volkswagen Race Touareg 3, being prepared for January's 2011 Dakar Rally.

It's mini baby of Batman's Vehicle Look alike. With its identical look and placement of the blue valves, black hoses, steel tubing, and radiator elements. The exterior color of the vehicle in the teaser is also the same as that of the prototype.

With this, Volkswagen will be looking to win their third Dakar in a row, following Carlos Sainz & Lucas Cruz' 2010 victory, and Giniel de Villiers & Dirk von Zitzewitz' 2009 win. The company plans to radically improve the aerodyamics of the current race-ready Touareg, while keeping the inspiration of the current mass production vehicle.

The 300-horsepower (224-kW) TDI engine already in use will remain unchanged. Also not receiving an update are the suspension and the chassis.

Testing of the new Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 will continue later this month in the Moroccan desert. Once the hot weather testing is complete, the car will be formally unveiled in August before taking on the St. Petersburg to Sochi Silk Way Rally in Russia one month later.

Flash Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Routan

This 2009 review is representative of model years 2009 to 2010.
By Staff of MSN Autos

One has to wonder what the business reasons were behind the creation of the Routan. Yes, VW wants to extend its presence in America, but minivans are not a growing segment here, and the Routan is for the most part a rebadged Chrysler (i.e., the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country). It does have some VW styling cues, upgraded interior materials and a slightly different suspension, but ultimately the Routan feels and drives like those other large people movers; it has adequate power, mediocre fuel economy and so-so handling. Unfortunately, the VW does not get the cool seating options offered in the Chrysler models namely the Stow n' Go or Swivel n' Go. Our test Routan was the SE trim, and while its price was more than $32,000, it felt bare. A U-Connect Bluetooth button was present in the dash, but after pressing it, I was informed that the vehicle did not support that feature. And the dual roof consoles in the rear seating area that looked like a DVD entertainment system turned out to be dual sunglass holders. Basically, the Routan is not a bad minivan. However, if you're in the market for a people mover, I'd suggest going directly to the original rather than the "German engineered" copy. Perry Stern
I was happy to see Volkswagen get back into the minivan segment. Unfortunately, there is nothing about the Routan that feels like a Volkswagen, other than the badges and the geometric pattern of the seat fabric. It's far from being a spiritual successor to the Microbus or even the Eurovan, and there is a reason: The Routan is based on the Chrysler Town & Country and retains most of the mechanicals, including the engines and drivetrain. Volkswagen says the suspension and steering have been retuned, but the Routan feels just as lumbering and cumbersome as the Chrysler. There is plenty of squat and dive under acceleration and braking, and the steering is vague on center. I found the brake pedal too high in relation to the accelerator pedal, making it difficult to go quickly to the brake pedal. Routan styling is different from the Chrysler offering, and it looks good for a minivan, but the driving experience just isn't what is expected from Volkswagen. Mike Meredith
I am not sure what the German engineers at VW did to improve this rebadged version of the Chrysler Town & Country. Besides the big VW emblems on the front and rear and the more attractive exterior styling, the Routan seems similar to the Chrysler minivan. Nevertheless, the Routan is easy to drive around town. The smooth, 3.8-liter V6 engine tested delivered 17.5 mpg in mixed driving. The easy-to-stow rear seats made transporting large items easy; the automatic sliding doors worked efficiently; and it was helpful to have buttons on the key fob and inside the minivan to easily open the doors for passengers. Overall, the Routan is a decent minivan. If you are cost-conscious and not brand-sensitive, however, you might want to compare it with a Chrysler minivan. Joe Chulick
The Volkswagen Routan is a typical minivan. Like the similar Dodge minivan, the Routan is built around utility and offers little amusement (unless you count watching a TV from the back seat, which I don't). The steering wheel feels like a stretch from the driver's seat and has a buslike feel, perhaps because of the angle. There is plenty of storage space sprinkled everywhere, and it seems as if there are at least two cupholders for every passenger (is that really necessary?). The materials are sturdy and no doubt easy to clean. Overall, the Volkswagen Routan is exactly what a minivan needs to be. I just think that minivans should aspire to be something more, and the Routan is most definitely not something more. Paul Hagger

First Drive Review: 2009 Volkswagen Routan

This 2009 review is representative of model years 2009 to 2010.
By Jared Gall of Car and Driver

In spite of a booming world population, melting ice caps, and not yet having sprouted gills, humans continue to mate and bear young. For other species, feeding offspring and keeping them from the jaws of predators are major problems, but for mankind, it's mostly transporting the kids that gives us headaches. Volkswagen PR people tell us that the presence of two or more little ones in an American family significantly reduces the likelihood of that family's purchasing another VW, regardless of past ownership experience. The Touareg, starting a parking ticket shy of 40 large, is too pricey for many families and doesn't have a third-row seat anyway.
So to help meet its goal of 800,000 U.S. sales by 2018, the company decided it needed a minivan in the lineup. Convenient, then, that Chrysler had some spare manufacturing capacity lying about after euthanizing the Pacifica.

Building a Minivan Without Any of the Work

VW reps talk around the C-word when discussing the Routan, but the Routan is built on a Chrysler platform in a Chrysler plant by people and bots who used to build Chryslers in their day jobs but now assemble Chryslers and Volkswagens. It gets VW-ish sheetmetal and a dedicated interior and rides on an exclusive suspension, but those who expect the Routan to be more Chrysler than Volkswagen are not too wide off the mark. Think of it as a Volkswagen interpreted by Chrysler.
It still looks like a Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan from the outside. Although the Routan wears unique front sheetmetal and VW claims that all body panels have been massaged, the upright profile and hard edges of the Chrysler box can't be covered with mere makeup.
Inside, the Routan looks rich and feels solid but is clearly a Chrysler dressed up in prettier Volkswagen materials. Although the overall design is more thoughtful, the buttons and switches are all Chrysler, and the domestics' innovative but remarkably cheap-feeling center console remains, ready to be yanked out and tossed from the vehicle at a moment's notice. The shifter feels as though the odds of its finding drive or snapping off in your hand are dead even.
On the plus side, Chrysler's dual-screen, dual-input entertainment system and 115-volt power outlet are available in the Routan, as is the 30-gig in-dash multimedia system for storing music and photos, called the JoyBox by Volkswagen. Driver and passenger front and three-row curtain airbags are standard on all Routans (Routen?).

Short Take Road Test: 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 2.0T 4MOTION

This 2009 review is representative of model years 2009 to 2010.
By Csaba Csere of Car and Driver

Fuel is expensive, SUV sales have cratered, and buyers who still want high-off-the-pavement wagon-like machines with the option of all-wheel drive have downsized their desires. As a result, the three bestselling SUVs in the country this year (and last) are the Honda CR-V, the Ford Escape, and the Toyota RAV4.
The Volkswagen Tiguan parachutes into this market with perfect timing. Sharing its mechanical architecture with the Rabbit, the Tiguan is almost exactly the same size as the Escape, but it's three to seven inches shorter than the CR-V and RAV4, respectively.
This shorter size shows up in the VW's slightly smaller passenger- and cargo-volume measurements, but you'd never notice it. The front and rear seats feel very spacious, and there's plenty of luggage room for four people's stuff. And the rear seat folds easily and nearly flat when you need to bring home a new power washer or television.
Not unexpectedly for a German machine, the Tiguan drives beautifully. Its steering is accurate and feels just about perfectly weighted. The suspension is tautly controlled yet compliant on rough roads. And for a tallish vehicle weighing the better part of two tons, it displays excellent nimbleness and grip, achieving 0.81 g when you're howling its 235/55R-17 Michelin Latitude tires at the limit and stopping in a commendable 177 feet. The competition from Ford, Honda, and Toyota cannot match these figures or the Tiguan's dynamic gracefulness.
The Tiguan's powertrain is similarly satisfying. The combination of the turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 200 horses and a six-speed automatic driving all four wheels propels the SUV to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds and through the quarter in 16 flat at 88 mph. That's enough grunt for easy back-road passes, and none of the four-cylinder econo-utes can match that performance unless you step up to the optional V-6 in the RAV4, which easily puts away the Tiguan.
Still, the VW's powertrain will elicit few complaints. Other than in the first 10 feet from a dead stop, there's no perceived lag from the turbo engine, and the transmission shifts smoothly and intelligently. The gearbox also has full manumatic control, using a separate gate on its floor shifter. The EPA fuel-economy figures of 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway are nothing special for the segment, but we got 22 mpg under a variety of conditions, and at a steady 70 mph, the Tiguan delivers an honest 25 mpg.
Options
Outside and in, the compact SUV looks clean and understated in a Bauhaus kind of way. The controls are well laid out, and the driving position is fine, though several of us would have preferred moving the adjustable steering column about an inch lower than its lowest setting. Dominating the center of the dash is the LCD screen for the optional nav system. It's a large touch screen and is easy to reach, but programming a destination reveals some of the convoluted logic that seems to be a core competency of most German automakers.
Our Tiguan test vehicle was absolutely loaded, starting with the top-of-the-line, SEL 4MOTION model ($33,630) and adding the nav system (bundled with a backup camera for $1990), a humongous sunroof ($1300), and rear side airbags ($350). That comes to a staggering total of $37,270 and jettisons the Tiguan right out of the class of SUVs that includes the Escape, CR-V, and RAV4. Although you can get a front-drive manual Tiguan for as little as $23,890, the least expensive all-wheel-drive model starts at $29,565.
All-wheel-drive CR-Vs start at less than $23K, and it's tough to get one to top 30 grand. Even the much quicker V-6 RAV4 doesn't get beyond the low thirties. For the price of this Tiguan, you can get an Acura RDX or a Land Rover LR2 and even start thinking about a BMW X3 or the soon-to-arrive Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLK. All of these more chichi machines can match or exceed the Tiguan's dynamics, and except for the LR2, they are also quicker.
VW seems to be trying to take the middle ground between the mainstream and premium mini-utes. The Tiguan is good enough to fulfill that mission, but we wonder if the VW badge delivers sufficient cachet to motivate buyers to step up to the price premium.

Review: 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

This 2009 review is representative of model years 2009 to 2010.
By Evan Griffey of MSN Autos
Rating: 8.1

Bottom Line:

VW hits the compact SUV scene with the GTI-powered Tiguan. From its base FWD S model ($23,200) to the upscale 4Motion-equipped SEL ($32,940), the Tiguan provides Euro-inspired driving dynamics and Old World sophistication.
Pros:
  • Outstanding ride, handling, shifting
  • Great entry-level model
  • Quite, quality Euro-inspired interior
Cons:
  • Uninspired, run-of-the-mill SUV bodylines
  • GTI motor struggles with extra 500 pounds
  • Base audio system is horror show

What do you get when you crossbreed a tiger and an iguana? Volkswagen answers this query with the Tiguan, the automakers first offering in the ultra-competitive compact SUV segment. The newcomer gets a dose of classic Fahrvergngen courtesy of a turbocharged engine swapped out of the venerable GTI, and a decidedly European road feel compliments of a well-sorted suspension. Add an elegant interior and you have a rookie thats ready to roll.
Model Lineup
The Tiguan is offered in three model trims: S, SE and SEL. The base S is available only in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration with standard 16-inch wheels and tires, and VWs base Metro cloth interior. The S has a limited list of options.
Moving up to the SE opens the door to VWs optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, standard 17-inch rolling stock or an optional 18-inch combination, as well as an upgraded Urban cloth interior.
The top-line SEL features 18-inch rolling stock, a 300-watt Dynaudio audio system, dual-zone climate control and a leather interior as standard fare. There are many options to choose from, including 4Motion and a trick touch-screen navigation system.
Under The Hood
All Tiguan models get the same powerplant, the GTIs turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. This mill pumps out 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque from 1700 to 5000 rpm. Front-wheel drive Tiguans enjoy 19/26 (city/hwy) mpg ratings while 4Motion versions check in at 18/24.
VW has covered all the bases when it comes to gearboxes. Three-pedal fans can opt for a 6-speed manual while set-it-and-forget-it types can select a 6-speed automatic with Tiptronic. The automatic provides authoritative, smooth gear transitions and, when in Tiptronic mode, driver-selectable shift points. Shift speed was adequate but we found constantly reaching for the shifter to change gears a tad tedious. Paddle shifters would calm the scene considerably and intensify the Fahrvergngen factor.
Inner Space
The Tiguans functional interior layout features easy-to-reach ventilation controls, a clear and concise gauge cluster, a sophisticated yet simple navigation system and a big panoramic sunroof. The sunroof is an impressive 12.7 square feet, and when you press the button it feels like the heavens are opening up above your head.
There is a definite upscale feel to the leather-clad SEL-trim interior, but the cloth-skinned cabins of the S and SE models are also quite posh. We especially liked the contrast of the tan upholstery with the black upper dash. The absence of flimsy plastic trim pieces and use of cushioned surfaces throughout served to reinforce the highly refined aura inside the Tiguan.
On The Road
The overall shape of the Tiguan was much more subdued than we expected, with the likes of the bawdy TI in its bloodlines. There is no standout feature that visually grabs at you, and the gray rocker cladding upsets the vehicles proportions. Its unfortunate because, once at speed, the Tiguan lives up to its genetics, clawing like a tiger in the turns while moving down the road with the veracity of a spike-laden iguana.
The suspension is the star of this show, as even the base S FWD and its commuter-esque 16-inch rolling stock make all the right moves when pressed. Hot-shoeing a 4Motion-equipped SEL and its four-corner propulsion means you can really press the issue. A touch slower to react but much more able to retain traction when pushed to the edge the 4Motion SEL feels more substantial, and you can feel the talons come out when its driven hard.
The AWD system normally sends 90 percent of the engines torque to the front wheels, until conditions require more torque to be sent aft. Given the proper circumstances, the system can provide up to 100 percent rear-wheel drive. This makes for an adept all-season performer that can retain its agility in slippery conditions.
The 2.0-liter GTI engine feels a bit stressed dealing with the 500 additional pounds of heft in the Tiguan (3,631 lbs. for a 4Motion automatic). The 2.0-liters wide torque band provides ample grunt under moderate acceleration, but when the stakes go up so does engine strain. The turbocharged mill lets the Tiguan easily keep pace, but there is no ascertainable onset of boost no sudden, deep breath followed by an onslaught of power like in the GTI.
Right For You?
Euro-inclined buyers will appreciate the Tiguans on-road dynamics, cozy, comfortable cabin and its overall attention to detail. The $23,200 base Tiguan S is worthy of consideration for those looking for a bargain. Furthermore, VWs Carefree Maintenance Program makes it easy to keep the flame of desire alive with full coverage of the vehicles 10,000-, 20,000- and 30,000-mile scheduled maintenance.
There are many competent propositions in the compact SUV segment, which will see more and more action as gas prices rise. The Tiguan is a player. Its up against stiff competition, but the VW is certainly deserving of a test drive and a shot at the big time.
